About the event
What is World Ozone Day?
World Ozone Day, officially recognized as the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, is commemorated every year on September 16th. Established by the United Nations General Assembly, this day celebrates the Montreal Protocol's signing in 1987, an international treaty designed to protect the Earth's ozone layer by phasing out the production of numerous substances responsible for ozone depletion.
Why Celebrate World Ozone Day?
Ozone Layer Protection: The ozone layer acts as a shield, absorbing most of the sun's harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation, protecting life on Earth.
Public Awareness: It raises awareness about the importance of the ozone layer, the effects of its depletion, and the success of international cooperation in environmental conservation.
Health and Environment: By protecting the ozone, we safeguard human health from skin cancers, cataracts, and immune system suppression, and preserve marine and terrestrial ecosystems.
